Two new Downtown Ambassadors
After a winter hiatus and a full school schedule, two Downtown Ambassadors, Melina and Delvin have joined us for the Spring. They have spent weeks being trained by The Youth Bureau and Public Safety. Their youth and enthusiasum is always welcomed. Please make them feel welcomed as well.
In the summer, more Ambasssadors will be hired to assist visitors or residents with reliable directions and general information about downtown and parking. Most of the Ambassadors are students and may be seen in the late weekday afternoons. Ambassadors monitor the pedestrian friendliness and cleanliness of downtown by noting missing or cracked sidewalks, broken street crossing signs or vandalism so that these issues may be taken care of immediately.
Working in teams, Ambassadors proactively engage in discussions with the business owners and downtown visitors to ascertain suggestions people have for downtown development. The collected information will help the BID understand what business owners, visitors, residents or workers of downtown desire and create appropriate programming. The BID’s mission remains to increase economic activity in the downtown.
Look for the Ambassadors, identified by silver jackets and yellow BID hats, say hello and let them know what you think about downtown White Plains. The Ambassadors are friendly faces and downtown “welcome wagons.” They possess useful and reliable information and are eager to help.
We look forward to seeing you downtown.
Last summer...
You may have seen these friendly White Plains students on the streets of downtown
giving directions, meeting with business owners, and greeting visitors to
the City. The program was conducted in conjunction with the City's Public
Safety Department and the Youth Bureau. Ambassadors were selected
by the White Plains Youth Bureau Employment Services Program.
A future pro-baseball star, a new hoop's hero, future law enforcement professionals,
and the next Stanley Greenspan are among the multi-talented students participating
in the program. Some ambassadors speak Spanish, French, Hindi and Urdu enabling
them to serve White Plains' diverse visitors and residents. They were there
to assist you and to get feedback from you on the downtown conditions. We
hope that you let the Ambassadors know your concerns and asked them questions.
They were happy to help and were directly connected to the BID office with
phones generously donated by Nextel.
We are hoping to continue this program with the assistance of some White Plains
senior citizens. If you or someone you know is looking to do some volunteer
service in the community, call the BID office for more information.
This program is promoting civic pride and making downtown an even friendlier
place to spend time. Our first ambassadors are amazed at how many people they’ve
assisted over the summer!
